That your scrawl seems never to weary
Twice a year a multilingual anthology from publications from home and abroad.
Why the name Whirligig?
Simply, it’s the English translation of ‘schrijverke’, the name under which the publishing house operates. In a literal translation the English name would be ‘little author’. But according to Van Dales Dutch/English dictionary, the English name for Gyrinus natans, the small beetle that can walk on water, and whose Dutch name ‘schrijverke’ was borrowed for the publishing house, is ‘whirligig’. So there you are.
However, it seems that ‘whirligig’ in that sense is particularly British-English, while in American-English it may refer to about anything spinning.
Oh well, either way: in both senses it’s a nice name for a journal like this.
